Gel Polish vs Nail Varnish – And How to Remove Them Safely

The result might look the same – a flawless, glossy finish and a head-turning shade, but gel polish and nail varnish couldn’t be more different beneath the surface, both in terms of what's in them, how you apply them and, crucially, how you remove them.  From the removal to application, these two nail systems serve different purposes and require different levels of care and skill.

At Glitterbels, we’ve built our reputation on professional-quality products for trained nail technicians. But with the launch of our new Nail Varnish collection, we’re bringing that same salon-level standard to beauty lovers everywhere. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just love doing your nails at home, here’s everything you need to know about gel polish, nail varnish and how to remove them safely.

Nail Varnish - Gloss, Simplicity and Complete Freedom

Nail varnish,  sometimes called nail polish, is the most accessible option for achieving beautiful nails at home. It dries naturally in the air, doesn’t require a UV or LED lamp, and can be removed quickly with acetone or non-acetone remover.

Our new range of Glitterbels Nail Varnishes is built for ease without compromising on colour payoff or staying power. Developed with the same pigments we use in our professional collections, these formulas deliver rich, even coverage and a high-gloss finish in just a few coats.

If you love to change your look regularly, or you’re after a budget-friendly way to express your style, nail varnish is your best friend.

Gel Nails - Pro-Only for a Reason

Gel polish, by contrast, is designed for professional use only. It requires training, precision and the right equipment to apply safely and effectively. Applied in thin layers and cured under a UV or LED lamp, gel polish forms a hard-wearing, long-lasting finish that can stay flawless for two to three weeks.

Because of this durability, gel polish is often used to create what we call gel nails – manicures designed for longevity, chip-resistance and a high-gloss shine. But this extra performance comes with additional responsibility. And that responsibility does need to lie in the hands of a professional nail technician.

At Glitterbels, we offer accredited training to ensure nail technicians are fully confident in gel polish application, from base coat to top coat. As our Head of Education, Charli Jepson, says:

“When applied and removed correctly, gel polish is an incredible tool for professionals. But without the right technique, it can easily damage the natural nail.”

If you’re new to the industry or want to upskill, our gel nails training courses are designed to help you master every stage of the process.

When to Choose What - A Nail Tech’s Perspective

If you’re not sure which option to go for, think about what you want from your manicure.

Clients heading off on holiday or needing something long-wearing for work might benefit from the durability of gel nails, provided they’re visiting a trained tech. In contrast, those who want to switch shades on a whim will love the speed and freedom of nail varnish.

As one of our educators recently put it:

“I had a client going to three weddings in two weeks. We chose varnish so she could match her nails to each dress. Sometimes flexibility wins over longevity.”

For professionals, both systems have their place in your kit. For everyday wearers, the choice is about lifestyle, budget and how much time they want to spend in the salon.

Removing Nail Varnish at Home

One of the best things about nail varnish is how easy it is to remove. All you need is a cotton pad and a reliable remover.

Soak a cotton pad in remover and press it gently onto the nail.

Hold for a few seconds to break down the polish.

Wipe clean with gentle strokes.

Wash hands and moisturise afterwards to keep nails and skin hydrated.

There’s no need for scraping, peeling or filing – the product does the work for you.

Removing Gel Polish - Why It’s a Job for Pros

Removing gel polish is a completely different process – and one that should always be handled professionally.

Done incorrectly, gel removal can damage the nail plate and weaken the surrounding skin. That’s why we train our nail techs to use the soak-off method properly:

Lightly file the top layer of the gel to break the seal.

Soak acetone-soaked pads and wrap each nail.

Wait 10–15 minutes before gently pushing off the polish.

Buff lightly, cleanse and rehydrate.

Under no circumstances should gel polish be peeled, picked or forced off. If your clients ask for advice, steer them towards professional removal. Acetone can be nasty stuff to the untrained!  If you’re a customer wearing gel, don’t be tempted to DIY it.

Final Thoughts - One Finish, Two Formulas

Both nail varnish and gel polish offer professional-quality results when used correctly – the key is knowing which system is right for your needs.

For beginners, beauty lovers and those who like to experiment, our new Nail Varnish collection is the perfect fit. For long-lasting, high-gloss wear that stands up to daily life, gel polish in the hands of a trained tech remains unmatched.

Whichever you choose, the most important step is always the same: use the right tools, trust expert advice, and never skip proper removal. Your nails will thank you for it.
